Marinol

It is a small pill filled with synthesized THC, which is an active ingredient found in marijuana. It is also referred as Dronabinol, which is the medical term. Marinol is used to treat side effects caused by cancer, aids, and other treatments that cause unpleasant results to the body. Generic Marinol is not yet available. FDA has approved Marinol prescription.

The health care professional needs to know the following conditions before her patient takes Marinol:

• High or low blood pressure
• Alcohol or drug abuse
• Pregnant
• Heart disease

If the patient has any of these conditions, the use of Marinol will be questioned and possibly denied.

Dosage

The dosage can be found in 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10mg pills. At this time, Marinol dosage used in studies range from 2.5mg to 20mg a day. Most patients react acceptably at the 2.5 mg dosage.

The directions on the prescription label must be followed when taking this pill by mouth. If a dosage is missed, it needs to be taken immediately. However, the missed dosage should be skipped if the next dosage is soon. Never take a double dose.
